Here in the midst of winter, even through the snow Here in the midst of winter, even through the snow, the beautiful snowdrops are making their always welcome appearance. The snowdrop has long been an emblem of death, as from its shape and form, it appears to wear a shroud or burial robe. However, the snowdrop has also been seen as a symbol of life and hope.

A story goes that when Adam and Eve were banished from the Garden of Eden, Eve stood sorrowfully looking at the flowerless earth around her covered with snow. An angel appeared and catching a falling snowflake, blew on it and it was transformed into a snowdrop. As the angel handed the flower to Eve, he told her to have hope as the summer was on its way, and as he left a ring of snowdrops appeared on the ground. Certainly, as the first flowers to appear after the cold and apparent death of winter, the snowdrop is a very welcome sight.

Lesson one is an introduction to the essential principles of Ayurveda - the five elements, the three gunas, the three doshas and the twenty qualities. These are key to your understanding of how you can take control of managing your health and well-being. Once you have completed the lesson and the quiz you can go back to this (and any other) lesson time and again to use as a reference.

It’s Friday and after a busy week I for one am l It’s Friday and after a busy week I for one am looking forward to some downtime - hopefully in my garden. I took this photo earlier this week and wanted to share it with you because my garden is where I am my happiest and most content. It is where I can relax into repetitive physical tasks and allow my busy brain to slowly become still. On days I can’t be in the garden I turn to meditation to help me quieten my mind. I want to share a simple square breathing exercise with you in case you would like to join me in stilling the clamour and moving towards peace.
.
Since we can be observers of the mind, it means that we are not the mind - it is an instrument for our use.
.
Sit somewhere comfortable and undisturbed
Picture a square or a box in your mind
Start by breathing in for a count of 4 as you travel up the left hand side of the square
Hold your breath for a count of 4 as you travel along the top
Breath out for a count of 4 as you travel down the right hand side
Hold your breath for a count of 4 as you return along the bottom of the square to the start
Repeat
