I took this video of the herb garden the other mor I took this video of the herb garden the other morning and was struck by its calm stillness compared to the bustle and energy it has in full summer. The New Year often inspires us to make changes to our daily lives, sometimes with challenging resolutions and promises to ourselves to take more exercise, eat better and so on. But we need to remember that we are still in winter, a season that invites us to slow down and conserve energy until the warmth of spring returns - to hibernate really! Ṛtucharya is an Ayurvedic word that means living in rhythm with the changing seasons. It’s about adapting our lifestyle to the climate, the cold, our environment, our time of life and the demands of our daily routine. Over the next couple of posts I’m going to share a little more about adapting our lives to these seasonal rhythms, telling you more about the doshas and their seasons and giving you some ideas of how to support yourself with adaptations to your lifestyle and diet, as well as some useful herbs for you to try. Autumn evenings, just the sound of the wind in the Autumn evenings, just the sound of the wind in the trees and birds calling to each other. The garden may be winding down for winter but it’s still beautiful look at and full of herbs for us to use in the dispensary.
The hops in the garden have been really good this The hops in the garden have been really good this year and we have been harvesting them for the clinic. Most of the harvest will be dried for teas, and some will be turned into tinctures and glycerites. Dried hops are a key ingredient in our Sleepy Tea where, along with lavender, chamomile and lemon balm, their sedative action relieves tension and anxiety, and induces restful sleep. The oestrogenic action of hops makes them an excellent remedy for menopause related symptoms, as well as suppressed and painful periods. They also have a depressive effect on men’s libido, as suggested by the phrase ‘brewer’s droop’!

We’ve been lovingly tending the garden and judiciously watering when needed, but the recent rain was very welcome and has encouraged a flush of new flowers. On a walk round this morning it was so lovely to see all these happy insects, it seems they are enjoying the garden just as much as we do!
